YAC Projects 2008-2009
Nine of the most active members of our 2008-2009 Youth Advisory Committee met in Ottawa in the spring of 2009. Over the course of the year, they had expressed frustration because they could see several problems in their communities but didn’t know how to fix them. Addressing this challenge was the goal of the 2008-2009 Ottawa trip. The nine members in attendance participated in several leadership and skill-building sessions which gave them the knowledge they needed to create positive changes in their communities. Ultimately, each of them developed a plan to address a problem they identified in their community. Over the next several months, they will be putting their plans into action in their communities, and we will post updates here so you can follow their progress!

Youth Group (Newfoundland and Labrador)
Problem: Youth boredom
Community: A small town in Newfoundland and Labrador
Solution: Create an after-school youth group where youth can go to hang out and have fun!
Outcome: Success! Nearly half the youth in the community attend the youth group, and the amount of drug and alcohol use has significantly decreased.

Youth Basketball League (Saskatchewan)
Problem: Youth boredom
Community: Yorkton, Saskatchewan
Solution: Create a recreational basketball league for youth ages 15-21.
Outcome: A great solution! Many youth in the community take part, and youth elsewhere in the province have heard about the league and have remarked on its success.

Mental Health Education (Nova Scotia)
Problem: The lack of education about mental health issues
Community: Cape Breton, Nova Scotia
Solution: Offer more educational resources on mental health in order to raise awareness among youth.
Outcome: Success! Presentations on mental health issues are being incorporated into a school mentoring program, Healthy Relationships for Youth.
