Learning Traditional Ways of Life

We’ve all heard about the importance of preserving traditional ways of life, especially when it comes to Aboriginal cultures in Canada. It is particularly hard for these groups to preserve their unique culture in the face of pressures to conform. However, the Government of the Northwest Territories has implemented a new program over the past few years to help youth learn their cultural traditions from their ancestors.

The “Take a Kid Trapping” program operates in several communities across the Northwest Territories. It varies in duration and in terms of the specific skills the youth learn, but in each community the program encourages youth to maintain traditional ties to the land and to understand the connections between Canada’s forests, waters and wildlife.

As part of the program, the youth go on a trip with elders to learn the skills of fishing, hunting and trapping. In some communities, participants also learn about first aid and cooking skills, while in others they learn about tracking, cleaning and meat preparation. They also have the opportunity to learn about the cultural significance of these practices (Take a Kid Trapping Program Report). The response has been overwhelmingly positive from the youth involved, and many have expressed an interest in participating again. For more information on this program or to get involved, visit the Government of the Northwest Territories Municipal and Community Affairs web site.

It’s like take-your-kids-to-work day, but on a whole other level. This is really interesting! This could be motivating for other cultures to create similar programs.

If you’re interested in other youth mentoring programs, check out the “Healthy Relationships for Youth” page in the Youth Initiatives section of our website: http://deal.org/youth-initiatives-database/healthy-relationships-for-youth/

It’s an awesome youth-led mentorship program in Nova Scotia!
